how to stop sugar cravings

How to beat sugar cravings

It can be quite frustrating when you want to lose the excess weight, get rid of spots/acne, have a clearer mind, and just feel better overall, but just cannot seem to stop eating sugar, when you know it could be the potential root of the problem.

In this post, I will be referring to the refined, processed sugars, and artificial sugars, which are detrimental to our health, wellbeing, and state of mind.

Where I work in Javea at Centro Terapeutico Javea, I come across people who find it hard to stop eating sugar, and some people don’t even know that they are eating it at all or excessively!

It’s hardly surprising because sugar is found everywhere.

Sugar is an addiction and the food industry knows it and uses it to their advantage.

I am typically shocked when I see what kind of food people are buying in the supermarkets. Lots of processed, pre-made food, carbonated drinks, crisps.

Hardly any fresh fruit or vegetables are in their trolley.

We need at least 7 cups of vegetables daily in our diet for our health.

coca cola javea

Behind the clever marketing of carbonated drinks, that make you feel sexy and cool, are the contents of which that ruin your health.

In some countries, such as Costa Rica, I was told by the locals that being seen drinking Coca-Cola, automatically makes you have the appearance of belonging to a higher class.

This is outrageous.

A 12-ounce (350ml approx.) can of regular Coke contains 39 grams of total sugar, which is about 9 1/3 teaspoons of sugar.

Do not be fooled by coca-cola zero either.

Coca-Cola Zero contains aspartame (E951) and acesulfame potassium (E-950). Both of which are 200x sweeter than sugar.

Aspartame is a neurotoxin, capable of passing the blood-brain barrier, that stimulates the cells to death by allowing too much calcium to enter the cells, thus releasing a huge amount of free radicals.

Free radicals age the body and disrupt the organs and glands than run it.

According to dr. Mercola (1) “The large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed.”

These chronic illnesses include Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Hormonal Imbalances, Parkinsons, Epilepsy, Memory Loss and more.

Sugar is a huge problem in our society and it’s definitely targeted at children. Parents also contribute to making sugar alright to have as long as the children are good, labeling it as a “treat”.

Sugar is not a treat. Far from it.

Sugar contributes to obesity, unexplained pains, feeling lethargic, having skin problems, moodiness, hormonal swings/imbalances, feeling tired all the time, unable to sleep, anxiety, heart disease, kidney disease, the list can go on…

Do not wait until your birthday or someone else’s birthday is over or until the New Year to make it your New Years Revolution.

Forget it.

You must make the change now, it is a powerful way for your body to heal and recover from many years of sugar abuse.

Once your body has recovered, and no longer feels addicted, you may then have the odd coffee with a bit of sugar, the odd cake, or the biscuit.

The danger is when you are consuming sugar on a daily basis, and unable to stop.

Where is the sugar?

I would approximate 90% of your local supermarket stock to contain processed sugar and sweeteners.

Sugar is found in sauces such as mustard and ketchup, bread, cereals, biscuits, cakes, drinks, milk, yogurt, cheese, pre-made food, frozen food, salad, and the dressing that goes with it!

Sugar is labeled under different names such as buttered syrup, cane crystals, cane sugar, caramel, castor sugar, confectioners sugar, corn syrup, corn sweetener, dextrin, dextran, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, galactose, glucose, golden syrup, grape sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Icing sugar, lactose, malt syrup, maltodextrin, sorbitol, table sugar, treacle.

Here’s a trick to remember some of the most commonly used names.

If you come across an ingredient label with the suffix -ose, you will know it’s sugar.

Carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, biscuits, cakes, waffles, and couscous will all turn to sugar in the body eventually.  The short chained carbohydrates such as puffed pastry, popcorn, croissants are the worst, as it is akin to injecting your body with sugar without it being broken down first.

This leads to insulin spikes.

Don’t get me wrong, we need a certain amount of sugar to function. We need the correct whole food type, and not the refined, processed type. See #5 in how to stop sugar cravings below.

How to stop sugar cravings

If you come to see me for a kinesiology session in Javea or at one of the retreats I work at, there is a hormonal balancing protocol that I offer, which includes tapping meridian points, that are unique to you, that will help with the sugar imbalance in the body.

Also, your body will choose a herbal supplement or vitamin/mineral by means of your muscle strengthening, that will help with the cravings.

Sugar cravings can also be due to an emotional imbalance. We know this, for example, if someone has a bad break up with their partner, all they want to do is eat an entire tub of ice-cream in front of the TV.

This is a superficial layer of emotion, and it is important to go much deeper to find the root cause of the imbalance, which typically lies in childhood up until the age of 14/15.

This is all covered in a kinesiology session.

Simple methods to help with the cravings

#1 Start with a protein breakfast

Studies have shown that by eating a protein dominant breakfast, it helps to increase satiety, feeling fuller for longer. It also helps with increased energy and weight loss.

Now, I’m not saying go full on with the English Breakfast, bacon, eggs, sausages, beans etc.. No!

I don’t recommend eating animal meat for several reasons.

I have been taking Sun Warrior Organic Plant Based Protein (Mocha flavor) smoothie every morning. 1 scoop contains 17 grams of protein. I add a courgette, or spinach, or cucumber into it and add almond or oat milk. It tastes delicious!

There are other sources of protein too.

For example, you could eat:

  1. Apple slices with organic peanut or almond butter. Obviously, the nut butter must be without added sugars or preservatives.
  2. If you eat eggs, make sure they are organic and free-range. Make a vegetable omelet.
  3. Mix chia seeds in almond milk, leave overnight until thickened to a yogurt-like consistency. In the morning, it should be thick and you can add fruit to it. Add some hemp seeds for extra protein.
  4. Buy toasted buckwheat. Soak overnight in water. The next day the buckwheat will be ready to eat. Simply add almond or oat milk to it and add fruit.

#2 Mix a bit of cocoa in water

When the sugar cravings come, and it’s hard to handle. Simply mix a bit of organic plain cocoa to some water in a small cup and drink. This is chocolate without anything added to it. A health shop will have plain cocoa.

It will help balance dopamine levels in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter and is involved with centers in the brain that control reward and pleasure.

People with low dopamine activity in the brain may be more prone to addiction.

#3 Supplements that help with craving

  1. L-glutamine – apart from helping you come off bad sugar cravings, it helps to line the intestines, therefore it is very useful for leaky gut challenges. it also helps to take heavy metals out of the brain. I typically go for the Bonusan brand and recommend to take 2 capsules 3 times a day. It’s not expensive.
  2. Licorice Root – is very powerful at helping the body to balance sugars. It is important to note that if you suffer from hypertension/high blood pressure, then it is best to avoid as it can increase blood pressure. (side note- alcohol also raises your blood pressure up for 2 days)
  3. Chromium – another powerful blood sugar balancing supplement. Typically, if you are a woman who is pregnant, or has already had children, chances are, there is a chromium deficiency. During pregnancy, you lose half your bodies supply of chromium.
  4. Mineral complex – sugar depletes b vitamin levels as well as calcium and magnesium.

#4 Support the liver

The liver, pancreas, and adrenals work together to help balance blood sugar chemistry. It would be wise to support the liver such as taking MSM 1000mg 3 x a day, or other liver helpers such as milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock.

During this time, it is best to eliminate anything that would disrupt the liver’s healing and detoxifying function, such as alcohol, fried foods, and coffee.

#5 Eat whole unrefined foods

If you are going to eat carbohydrates, eat whole unrefined carbohydrates that will need to be broken down by the body first. It is a much healthier option to go for rye bread and brown rice.

Eat the equivalent of  7 cups of vegetables a day. Ideally fresh and organic.

“Health is like money, we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.”  ~Josh Billings

I know that making changes by yourself isn’t always easy, especially if those around you ridicule your new ways, or if your loved ones just don’t support you.

It is important then, to find the right people that will support you , by joining groups of like-minded interest, and by connecting with well informed healers and practitioners to help guide and assist you on the path to wellbeing.

How to make the protective lining of your gut super strong from unwanted bacteria/matter

As the name suggests, leaky gut results from the “leakage” of undesirable matter, including bacteria, through the bowel wall and into the blood and lymph fluid creating a toxic environment for your body to deal with.

The gut has a protective lining. You can compare it with a fine mesh that may become weak and develop holes, thus allowing undesirables to enter the blood and lymph.

Why would it become weak in the first place? And what can you do to help repair, prevent leaky gut from happening and have a thriving friendly community in your gut?

Allergies and how to overcome them

According to the website “muy interesante” it has been estimated that 14 million people in Spain suffer from allergies, thats 30% of the population!. Scientists believe that by the year 2020, there will be one in every 2 people who will have an allergy.

Allergies which are not seen to can result in a reduction of working days and school attendance.

Allergies occur due to a response from the immune system, it overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.

With kinesiology, allergies can be dealt with in quite a simple way, boosting your immune system and finding the right nutrition that will help reduce or clear the allergic reaction.

Could your frozen shoulder be due to your Ileo-Cecal Valve?

Ileo-cecal Valve malfunction is responsible for many discomforts

frozen shoulder javea

The Ileo-cecal valve is a valve positioned in between the large intestine and small intestine. The valve, when working well, prevents back flow of waste material from the large intestine into the small intestine. As you may imagine, the colon is filled with waste material and should go towards the anus for elimination. If it goes back the other way, and seeps into the small intestine, which is for absorption of nutrients and minerals, can you see what kind of havoc may occur? What happens, is that this starts to affect the blood, and it becomes dirty due to the auto-intoxification.
